How Many Litter Boxes Do You Need, and Where Should They Go?

By ShopOfPets Editorial Team Published Reviewed 1 min read
Short answerA common guideline is one box per cat plus one extra, placed in quiet, easy-to-reach spots away from food and water.

Litter box problems are one of the most common reasons cats are rehomed, and the fix is often simple: more boxes, better placement and consistent cleaning.

The one-plus-one guideline

Many feline behaviour organisations suggest one litter box per cat plus one extra. For two cats that means three boxes, ideally in different rooms so one cat cannot guard them all.

Choose the location

  • Quiet but not hidden in a noisy utility corner.
  • Away from food and water bowls.
  • Easy access on every floor of the home for older cats.

Size and shape

Boxes should be about one and a half times your catโ€™s body length. Senior cats may need a low entry.

Cleaning routine

Scoop at least once a day and fully empty and wash the box regularly with mild unscented soap. If your cat suddenly avoids the box, speak to your vet to rule out health issues.
